Hatchet is a story of individual survival against great odds. It tells how a routine journey turned into a life-threatening and life-changing experience. The central character, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, is stranded alone at a lake deep in the Canadian wilderness after a small plane crashes after the pilot dies in flight from a heart attack. Here is your chance, 6th graders, to discuss the events of this book.

Survival Pack
If you had time to put a survival pack together, what would you include? How does this compare to the items in the survival pack Brian pulls out of the plane? Why doesn't Brian use all of these items?
If I had a survival pack I would put a knife in it, a lighter, a pack of hard corn, a bow and arrow, and a gun. This would help me by hunting, starting a fire, and making a shelter. If Brian had all of this stuff he could have survived for a longer period than what he did.
If I had to put a survival pack together I would put the following things in it: a pack of matches, water bottles, can vegetables, a can opener, a sleeping bag, a tent, chapstick, drink mixes, a pack of extra clothes, bug spray and a knife or a bow and arrow. Brian had some of the same things that I put in my survival pack like the sleeping bag, some food, drinks and matches. He didn't want to use all of his foods because he did not know how long it would be until someone found him or if anyone ever found him. He was careful about how much he ate.

These things would really help me because they could make a fire, hunt for food just incase i run out of hydrated food, and to find my way with a compass. If Brian had this equiptment then he would b able to survive for a very long time.
