Fire
Why is fire referred to as "a friend and a guard."
The fire is a friend to Brian because it is the only other thing with him that he has to protect him. It is a guard to him because it keeps him warm and keeps bugs away.
He calls fire a friend and a gaurd because it helps him cook food. It keeps the mistqutoes away. It keeps him warm at night. It helps him see at night, and can use it as a signal for rescue.
Brian referred it as a friend because it brings warmth and cooked food. But it's also referred as a friend because it protected him from a swarm of mosquitoes.
Fire is considered a friend and guardian to Brian because it keeps him warm and keeps the mosquitoes away. His fire also keeps away some bigger animals unlike porcupines and skunks.
